John William V. Villamarin
John William V. Villamarin started playing the flute at the age of 11. At 17, He got accepted in the University of the Philippines, College of Music, Flute major, with the degree of Diploma in Creative Performing Musical Arts under the tutelage of Professor Antonio Ruiz Maigue, who was a student of internationally renowned virtuoso flute master Jean-Pierre Rampal at the National Conservatoire de Paris.  Mr. Villamarin was disciplined in playing classical music during his stays in his College years.  From the start of his schooling at the said University, he was granted his scholarship from the University of the Philippines ROTC band.  He also attended Theresa Beaman’s flute master class at the same year.  He had his short flute study under Dr. Santiago Yangco, a dentist and at the same time a flute master in the Philippines and studied flute under internationally renowned flute master Trevor Wye.  John had short flute lessons also with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra’s principal flautist, flute professor in University of Santo Tomas and University of the Philippines, College of Music, Professor Enrique Barcelo.

His first orchestra playing experience began in 1997 with the Festival Symphony Orchestra.  During his stay in the University, he attended numerous workshops and master classes from some visiting instrumental artist and especially to some known foreign jazz musicians held in the Philippines.  His interest in jazz music awakened him and made him an enthusiast, and explores the other limitations of flute playing not just in classical music but also for other genres of music.  He attended David Jerome Johnson’s (African-American virtuoso flautist) “The Art of Orchestra Playing” Master class at the University of the Philippines in the year 2000.  September of 2002, he joined the Metro Manila Community Orchestra under the baton of international Filipino composer Professor Josefino “Chino” Toledo. He also played with other orchestras in the Philippines, like Manila Symphony Orchestra II, Manila Philharmonic Orchestra and the University of the Philippines Orchestra. Year 2004, when he was 24 years old, he was the Category C – Finalist for National Music Competition for Young Artist also known as NAMCYA in the Philippines.  William was the champion in music quiz bee held in the University of the Philippines in 2005.  By 2006, he graduated his Diploma degree at the same school, University of the Philippines, College of Music.  At the age of 28, he continued his study at the same University with the degree of Bachelor of Music, Flute Major.  He became a member of the Tutti Flutti: Flute Choir with his teacher in flute, Professor Antonio Ruiz Maigue.  The Tutti Flutti had countless of concerts in Manila including in the University of the Philippines, Alabang Town Center, Far Eastern University and others.  On the summer of 2009, William joined an Afro-Latin Band in where he played flute and bongos and also arranges music for the band.  October of 2009, he attended one of the world’s flute masters, Maestro Robert Aitken’s flute Master class held in Makati City, Philippines and also joined the concert for Maestro Robert Aitken with the Philippine Flute Society: Flute Orchestra in Makati City, Philippines. Early of 2010, he sat on Dr. Teri Sundger’s flute master class in the University of the Philippines, College of Music.  March of 2010, he had his graduation recital for Bachelor of Music degree and graduated in April of the same year in University of the Philippines, College of Music.  May of 2010, he visited Hong Kong and had an invitation from the Director of Hong Kong Flute Centre and Conductor of Hong Kong Flute Orchestra Mr. Ringo Chan, to join with his flute orchestra with their visiting world famous Flute Maestro Andras Adorjan.  During his visit in Hong Kong, Mr. John William Villamarin also attended the master class of Maestro Andras Adorjan at Hong Kong Flute Centre, Wan Chai, Hong Kong under the sponsorship of passionate flautist and also an enthusiast musician Mr. Ringo Chan.

Mr. Villamarin started his career as a flute teacher in 1998, during his sophomore year in the university.  By then, he had experienced teaching flute in a class/group setting in his town teaching High School students for 1 year.  During his early years in college he already taught some of his members in the band, Angono Wind Ensemble, where he learned flute and became the Assistant Band Conductor.  He also gained more experiences in teaching flute in some music studios in Manila.  He is also well diverse in handling students aging from 9 to adult and other nationalities like Chinese, Taiwanese, Filipino, Filipino-American, and Korean in teaching flute.  He handles private flute tutoring students from known international and local schools in the Philippines like, Brent International School, International School Manila, Reedley International School, GCF International School, Ateneo De Manila University, De La Salle University, Miriam College.  He also had experienced teaching in the University of the Philippines, College of Music – Extension Program in 2007.  Year 2008, he was hired as a Music and Flute Teacher in International Learning Christian Academy (Korean School) in Parañaque City, Philippines and also as a Flute Teacher in Center for Applied Music, Miriam College in Quezon City, Philippines.

As for now, he is handling some flute lessons for the young learners and giving well relevant instructional materials to his students.  He loves to share his knowledge and experiences in flute, teaching new and young flautist. He is very devoted and well passionate not just a flautist but also as flute teacher.
